How Do I Grill the Perfect Burger?

Great burgers come in all shapes and sizes. Some are thick and some are thin. Some weighing a half pound or more and other weight less than a ¼ pound. Some are perfect spheres, while others look a bit bumpy and odd. What your patties look like doesn’t matter all that much, what does matter is how you grill them. That may leave you wondering, how do I grill the perfect burger? Here are a few tips:
- Heat your grill to medium heat. You don’t want it too hot or the outside of your patty will cook faster than your inside, leaving you with a dry burger.
- Cook your patties slowly for best results.
- Never use your spatula to press down on a cooking hamburger patty. This squeezes the fat (and the flavor) from the meat.
- Only flip your burgers once or twice during the cooking process
- Watch for flare-ups. Flames will overcook a good hamburger patty.
After removing your burger from the grill, let stand for 2-4 minutes to allow the juices to settle in the meat, making a much more delicious patty.
How Long Do You Cook Hamburgers on a Grill?

The answer to the question, how long do you cook hamburgers on a grill, really depends on the thickness of the patty. Bigger patties will take longer than thinner ones. But, the average grilling time is about 12-17 minutes for a basic ½ inch to ¾ inch hamburger, cooked on medium heat.
